Happy New Year! It is a new decade and a time of new beginnings. Isn’t it great to know that God’s mercies are renewed day after day, with the rising and the setting of the sun? You and I belong to God. We come from God and we return to God. This month is a great time to re-commit ourselves to the gospel, the “good news”. That good news must first take root in our own self; in our body, soul and spirit. We must nourish the word in the garden of our own self through prayer, reading, works of mercy, sacrament and exercise. Yes, exercise! The good news can incarnate in our very bodies by good care taking of the body, the temple of the Holy Spirit. For me that means basketball with my son, golf with my brother-in-law and hiking. I bought some boots, and “these boots were made for walking”. Wow, did I ever just date myself! My meditations this year will be on my prayer mat, but also as I walk, think and pray. How about you? What is God calling you to? Sometimes it is the little things: turning off the television, playing games with your kids, creating a specific prayer space in your home, calling an old friend, going to mass more often, reading the bible or a solid spiritual book, or serving the poor in our community. Our Lord say’s:
“Come to me heedfully and listen, that you might have life”
Let us listen and respond. Let us cultivate silence in our daily lives. Let us joyfully say “yes” to our loving God to whatever he asks of us. God can be trusted. Amen. +
